How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect Mutton Chops Beard Shape

Anybody can grow a mutton chops beard, and you can leave it as long or short as you’d like. Follow these steps to get the look.

1. Grow out your facial hair.

You’ll want to start by growing all your facial hair out. We recommend aiming for at least 0.5 inches of hair before you start trimming and styling your beard. If you struggle with dry skin, use a beard oil with natural vitamins and essential oils to moisturize your skin and hair. This will promote healthy hair growth and prevent dry, brittle hair.

2. Shave the areas around your chin, neck, and cheeks.

To achieve the classic mutton chop look, you’ll need to shave the hair around the chin, neck, and cheeks, leaving only the sideburns. The classic mutton chops don’t include a mustache, so you’ll need to shave that, too. Use a safety razor with a fresh blade as well as a shave lube to prevent knicks, cuts, and razor burn.

3. If you’re keeping the mustache, make sure it touches the sideburns.

If you are going for the mutton chops + mustache look, keep the mustache, as well as a thin line that connects your mustache to your sideburns. You’ll use the same technique as above, just keep that extra patch of hair on either side of your lips.

4. Keep it brushed and well-groomed as it grows.

If you’re planning to grow long mutton chops, be sure to brush your beard daily and keep it well-groomed. You can also use trimming scissors to remove stray hairs and finish up with beard butter for soft, smooth facial hair.
